Ezzie jolted awake. Her heart was hammering in her chest.
“You okay?” Beau asked, his voice thick with sleep.
“I’m fine, just a dream. Go back to sleep.”
“Mmm, love you.” He rolled over, and his breathing evened out again as he drifted into sleep.
She got up quietly, not wanting to disturb him again, and padded out of the room. A quick glance at Winifred’s bed showed that she was still gone.
Ezzie wandered down the long hall, not really sure where she was going. She found herself in the museum again. When she entered, three large blue spheres lit up the room.
She walked to the far end of the room and looked at the old pieces of ships that had sunk years ago. There were a few figureheads completely intact. One was a woman dressed in a ball gown, her hair a mass of curls that stretched behind her into the wood of the bow. She was meant to be beautiful, but she looked sad to Ezzie. The other was a mermaid with long flowing hair and a curvy tail.
“They’re beautiful, are they not?”
Ezzie whirled around to find Sora a few feet from her. “They are, yes.”
“Couldn’t sleep?” Sora asked her.
“I have a lot on my mind,” Ezzie replied dryly.
“We aren’t all monsters, you know. I don’t wish for you to die, nor does Nielle.”
“But why does anyone want me to die?”
“The situation is complicated.”
“Yeah, I’ve heard that a lot. I just wish someone would uncomplicate it for me. This is my life we’re talking about.” Ezzie’s voice rose an octave.
“I know that.” Sora smiled sadly.
“Will you tell me why?”
Sora pinched the bridge of her nose. “Yes, but I’ll probably regret it tomorrow. Come, let’s go somewhere we can sit and talk. The story is not a quick one.”

Jessica Gibson is a recovering bookaholic, she’s down from four books a week to a more reasonable one. It was that love of words and creativity that made her dream about writing her first book. That dream was hidden for years, always put on the back burner, filed away in the “someday” section, until her husband Matt gave her the kick in the pants she needed to actually get off her butt and write. Jessica and Matt live in Southern California and have a serious addiction to reality tv shows like Pawn Stars and American Restoration. They have one son and hope to add to the family in the near future.
