EXCERPT :

Running along the edge of the rooftop, Allyssa kept an eye on the man below. He was three blocks ahead of her as he sprinted down the street, clutching a bag of coins. Allyssa jumped the two-foot gap to the adjacent rooftop, not wanting to lose sight of the thief. He slowed and turned a corner into an alleyway. With any luck, he’d hide there and she could catch him by surprise.
Allyssa couldn’t believe she was the one running on rooftops after him. Grevik had insisted only she could do such a thing because she was smaller, lighter, and more agile. She suspected her friend was just too much of a pansy to do it himself.
There was one more building to go. Unfortunately, the next one was much further away. If she had to guess, it was a good eight to ten feet. Keeping her breathing steady, she steeled her resolve and ran a bit quicker. She pumped her legs faster and faster, the edge of the rooftop rapidly approaching. Twenty feet to go. Why did she agree to this? Focus, she scolded herself. Now was not the time to think about it. Ten feet to go. Here goes nothing.
Her right boot hit the edge of the roof. Using all her strength, she pushed off, flying through the moonlit night. Her arms waved and her legs ran on air as she hurtled toward the adjacent rooftop landing with a jolt. Starting to fall forward, she tucked her head, rolled onto her back, and somersaulted. Crouching low, her heart beat frantically. Blimey. A smile burst on her face. That was fun. Not that she was about to do it again, though.
Jumping to her feet, she glanced over the edge of the two-story building, searching for the thief. Sure enough, he was right below, hiding in the alley. Allyssa pulled out her dagger and slid onto her stomach. Peering over the side, she carefully aimed her weapon at him. As long as the thief stood still, striking him would be relatively simple. She counted to three and threw her knife, watching it zoom down thirty feet and whack the man dead center in his right shoulder. He screamed, dropping the bag of coins as he looked frantically about for his attacker. The hilt was facing straight up and hopefully wouldn’t give away her position.
If only Grevik would hurry and catch up. Shortly after they had started pursuing the thief, a rowdy crowd of about twenty men spilled out from a tavern, blocking the street as a fight broke out. Since Allyssa and Grevik didn’t want to lose the thief, he told her to climb the building so she could follow him. She hoped Grevik had made it through the crowd without incident.
Standing, she scanned the adjacent streets, not finding her friend anywhere in sight. The thief still stood in the alleyway, not making an attempt to run. It was up to her then. She climbed down the ladder attached to the side of the building. Taking a deep breath, she stalked around the corner.
The man stood in the middle of the dark alley, clutching his shoulder. “Stay back or I’ll gut you!” he screamed.
“Funny coming from an injured lowlife who steals,” she answered, trying to use a deep voice.
The man laughed. “Go back home where you belong, little girl,” he said, shaking his head.
“That’s no way to speak to someone who’s about to wallop you.” She plucked her knives free and held them low. “Now give me the bag of coins you stole from the baker and maybe, just maybe, I won’t kill you.”
The man yanked the dagger out of his shoulder, stifling a scream. When his head tilted up, his eyes gleamed with malice. Based upon the way he held his body, prepared to fight, he had to have some skill. Nothing she couldn’t handle, though. Not wanting to risk the weapon cutting her, she threw her knife at the dagger he held, hitting it hard enough that he dropped it, the metal clanging on the stone street.
“What are you waiting for? Scared?” the man taunted.
Allyssa meandered toward him as she tossed her cape behind her shoulders, freeing her arms and legs. “Yes,” she whispered when she was only three feet away. “I am scared. Scared I’ll kill you when you really deserve to be rotting in a jail cell.” And with that, she spun and kicked his head, sending him to the ground. Much faster than she expected, he sprang to his feet and swung his fist at her. She stepped out of the way and was about to hit him when he punched her cheek. Stars exploded across her vision. Blasted. That would leave a mark.
“You did not just hit me,” Allyssa said, seething with rage.
The man had the audacity to laugh at her. She flung her last knife into his thigh. He screamed. Wimp. Using a front kick, she struck his chest and he went flying to the ground. Just for good measure, and because he’d hit her face of all places, she went over and kicked his groin. He had the decency to curl into a ball and surrender.
A man ran into the alley behind her. She spun around and came face to face with her friend, Grevik. “It’s about time you showed up.” She smiled sweetly at him. “You missed all the fun.”
He went over to the man lying on the ground, making sure he was knocked out cold. “While you were jumping over rooftops like a gazelle, I was stuck in that brawl outside the Snakeskin Tavern.” He stood and turned to face her. “I can’t believe you took this man on without me, Lilly.”
The first time she met Grevik all those years ago, she’d told him her name was Lilly so he wouldn’t suspect her true identity.
“I couldn’t wait for you,” she said with a shrug. Now that she could see Grevik in the moonlight, she noticed his knuckles were cut and bleeding. “Are you all right?” she asked, pointing to his hands, hoping he hadn’t broken a bone.
He nodded. “It was easier to punch a few of the drunks to make my way through the brawl.” Grevik scanned the rooftop. “I guess we can add jumping buildings to your ever-growing list of skills.”
“It was bloody fun,” she said, unable to suppress her smile.
Grevik shook his head. “You’re unbelievable. Only you would think leaping through the air thirty feet off the ground over alleys is fun.”
“You told me to do it so we wouldn’t lose the thief.” She picked up her daggers and sheathed them.
“Blame it on me,” he teased, wrapping his arm around her shoulder, tugging her closer to him. Allyssa stiffened before forcing herself to relax. This was the sort of thing friends did. “Come on,” he said. “We need to drop this bloke off to my contact in the City Guard so I can go home. It’s later than usual, and I don’t want Mum to wake up and find me gone.”
“I need to go home, too,” Allyssa said. If she didn’t arrive before daylight, she would be in severe trouble.

EXCERPT:

“So what’s your plan, Lorelei?” He had a tight grip on my hand as we headed toward the abandoned building.
I stopped walking and looked up at him. “Well, for starters, I need to go in alone. And before you protest, I have to remind you of what Peterson said. That might be why he was a no-show last time.”
“I don’t care what he said. There’s no way I’m letting you go in there alone.”
“I’ll be fine. Really.”
He huffed. “I’ve heard that before.”
“I have to do this. It’s the only way.”
He wasn’t happy about it, but he gave a reluctant nod and released my hand. “I’m giving you five minutes then I’m coming in after you.”
I didn’t tell him, but it gave me a great deal of comfort knowing that. I stepped over the broken glass doors, through the haze of dust into the place I was going to find my great aunt. But unlike our last visit, this time, the front desk wasn’t vacant. A pair of amber eyes gleaming in the dim light peered at me, moving steadily closer until a full unsightly form appeared.
I froze. This wasn’t just any derelict.
“Mmm. Something yummy,” it said in a low hiss.
A goblin? Here, in my world. This was a first. I stared, blinking to refocus in the dust he’d stirred with his movement. Until now, the only supernatural beings who’d entered my world were Adrius and Zanthiel. And of course Venus. But they were all here because of me in one way or another. This was different. Goblins and other lower creatures weren’t supposed to be able to pass through the veil. Yet here one was, staring me down while black froth dripped from its jagged teeth.
I stepped to the side to evade him, but the creature skirted around me, so I couldn’t pass. His glamour would have fooled most into believing he was human, not an attractive human, but human nonetheless. I could see otherwise. With the costume of magic stripped away the gangly creature resembled the goblins more than it did the fey. He had the body of a human male, but something about his appearance… his black pupilless eyes, the pasty shade of his skin, the overpowering stench of rotting leaves… Perhaps he was once a normal human and had been tortured and twisted for centuries into something nearly undefinable. He wouldn’t be the first, nor the last. Unless Peterson’s people got their way and they managed to eradicate the co-mingling of fey and humans. I didn’t want to think about how they planned to pull that off.
“I’m not here for you. I’m looking for someone.”
“The one they call Camilla, yesss?”
I stared hard at the creature. What did he know about all of this?
“So, which room is she being held in?” I tried to sound persuasive, authoritative… but that was a mind-altering device best left to the elves. I was more than capable of fending off a goblin, but finding one here in the back alley had thrown me more than a little. Plus I wasn’t exactly armed. But we had agreed, I’d go to meet with him, before we knew the him I’d be meeting was a goblin from the Unseelie Shadow Court. He’d claimed to know of Camilla’s whereabouts, and I needed to find her. I needed to get answers about what was going on once and for all, and with any luck find a way to prevent the veil from sealing. And if things went according to plan, I’d be able to break the curse binding Adrius to Venus and free everyone from her wrath.
“I’ll tell you which room whelp, after I gets what I’s wants.”
I pulled out an envelope of bills. Not even sure how much Adrius had put in there. Enough to make most human miscreants salivate he’d said dryly. Not sure what a goblin would think.
I had practiced enough spells with Abby to know I could conjure one to weaken this creature, but I had to be in touching distance. Not the best plan. I stepped back, trying to stay out of his reach, but my back hit a brick wall behind me. To my left there was a chain link fence and the locked door of the warehouse to my right. He glided toward me, moving steadily closer until his chest pressed against mine.
Glancing at the envelope with eyes as black as tar he sneered. "What I want, is you," he said urgently. “Just need a lil taste, lovely.”
I sucked in a gasp of air. “You don’t want me,” I assured him, shoving at his caved-in chest. “Even goblins find me unsavory.” Craning my head to the side I searched wildly for something, anything to double as a weapon.
“I’ll make it quick.” He sniffed me, then licked my face, running his sandpapery tongue up my cheek. “I can be gentle,” he hissed as I shoved against his chest. I brought my leg up to knee him in the groin, but his hand snaked down to push it back in place. Curse their superhuman strength. The foul stench of him made it hard to get any air, and the more I struggled, the less oxygen I had.
“Ah-ah, I thought we agreed this was going to be nice.”
His knee slid between my thighs. Panic raced through me. I started to call for help, but his hand slapped over my mouth, slamming the back of my head against the brick. Splinters of pain shot through my head. I squeezed my eyes shut, to dull the ache. I bit down hard on his fingers, nearly gagging from the bitter taste. He hissed and pulled his hand away from my mouth and clamped it around my throat.
“Listen, just let me go and you won’t get hurt,” I rasped through his charred fingers choking off my air. “You don’t want to hurt me. Let go and you can have what you want.”
I felt something stir beneath my skin. A slow simmer that grew to a raging boil in a flash. With a burst of force, I put my hands on its throat. The creature began to cough, choking and sputtering black phlegm. He staggered back away from me. I ran toward the door, but he recovered and flew in front of me to block my path. “I will hurt you,” I said. My voice sounded dark, foreign, and when I spoke I felt cold winds swirl around us.
The goblin didn’t seem to notice. “Shhhhh, sweet one,” he cooed, burying his pointed nose in my hair, and sniffing me again. “Mmmm…” Gobs of saliva dripped over his chapped lips. “It won’t hurt at all.”
“That’s where you’re wrong.” Adrius’ voice filled the darkness and he plunged a flaming blade into the goblin’s back. “It’s going to hurt a lot.”

EXCERPT:

The dirt shifted beside me, and the end of the tunnel opened. The crevice felt like it plucked me up in a whirlwind. In seconds, I landed on the ground face first on the surface of whatever lay beyond the tunnel. It smelled like nature after a storm. When I opened my eyes, I stared down at my mud-covered hands. The darkness that I once thought would be my tomb was now gone, and two low hanging moons lit the forest where I found myself. Even though I had no idea where I was, the fact that I was out of the hole sent a surge of relief that filled my entire being. I stood up, dusted off all the mud I could, and looked back. Strangely, there was nothing but trees. As I moved closer to the spot where I’d most certainly came from, all I saw was a mirror that reflected the woods. An illusion. I touched its smooth surface, tried to find the end of it but couldn’t. Another dead-end.
Before I could figure out what to do, I heard a voice and spun around to confront it.
“What are you doing here?” I heard a man’s voice growl, but I couldn’t see anyone. I looked around. He sounded like he was only a few feet from me.
“Where are you?”
“First, tell me why you’re here?”
“I don’t know why I’m here. I’m lost, I think. I was at a party, and while walking in the woods behind the house, I fell into a hole. Now here I am. I have no idea what happened. Where am I?”
Silence.
Right square in front of me, he appeared out of thin air. I blinked my eyes in disbelief. He seemed to be about my age and wore his hat cocked to one side with suspenders atop a blue button-up and brown trousers. It reminded me of Dashielle’s costume. I guess he could read the amazement on my face, so he answered the question that my mind was trying to form.
“Invisibility. That’s all.”
