The Excerpt (just for you)
Gianna
is on the verge of releasing her debut album. She’s hired Zak, a London-based
DJ, to help fine-tune her lead single. With Zak, she gets more than she
bargained for…
“You’re
a dork,” Gianna said, laughing at him.
“Maybe
we… I’d quite enjoy writing with you. Come up with something fresh.”
“I
would love that.”
He
smiled.
“More
about that later… Where is–”
He
was like the Mad Hatter. Zak turned and began to shuffle through the papers on
the control booth.
“Here,”
he said, giving her a lyric sheet. “Let’s get to work. We’re wasting time and
I’m ridiculously expensive!”
She
laughed again. “I think I can afford you.”
“The
microphone waits,” Zak said, pointing in its direction.
Nervously,
Gianna stood up. Her smooth, manicured hands found there way into the back
pockets of her frayed jeans. She playfully nudged Zak’s shoulder with her own
and walked to the small enclosure in the corner.
The
microphone hung low meeting her mouth. Gianna ran her hands through her thick
hair and placed a pair of headphones over her ears. She rolled her head back
and forth, popping her neck. She shook her hands and rubbed her cheeks. She was
trying to loosen up.
“I’m
trying to get in the zone, baby!” she called to Zak, jumping in place.
For
the first time in a while, Gianna was exuberant. Creativity was starting to
flow in her veins again. She eagerly wanted to impress Zak. More so, she wanted
him to like her.
The
sheet of music was poised in front of her and she smoothed the page flat.
Scrawled across the page in her own handwriting were the lyrics to “Secret.”
“I’m
ready when you are,” she said, speaking into the microphone.
Zak
fiddled with a few control buttons, and soon Gianna could her drumbeats slowly
building from the speakers surrounding her. The words were in front of her and
she started to sing.
Tell
me your secret
‘Cause
I can’t let you keep it
You
have my heart
So
go ahead and break it
So
much pain
It’s
time you unleashed it
‘Cause
either way, you’re gonna put me through it
I’m
alone
Left
here trying to understand it
You
can’t justify it
So
tell me your secret
Tell
me your secret
