The Light Tamer (The Light Tamer Trilogy)

Jessie moved from New York to North Carolina one week after school let out for summer break. Her newly single mother and Jessie move in with grandma Gayle. Being a teen in a retirement area, is one more thing to add to her ‘this sucks’ list. It’s bad enough to have to move, but even worse her alcoholic father left them as he went on a quest to be an artist in Greece.
Things begin to look up when she is reintroduced to Caleb, the dorky boy that saved her life one summer at the beach. Caleb is no longer scrawny and nerdy, he is now tall, dark and handsome. Caleb is a Light Tamer.
Jessie and Amber become fast friends. Amber is a no frills girl, her snarky comments and sassy attitude will raise a few eyebrows and have you laughing out loud. Amber is rough around the edges, a light tamer with only two years left to find the one she is bound to. Her father’s surfing accident left her dad paralyzed and her brother dead.
This paranormal romance will keep you on the edge of your seat with humor, romance, and determination. Fall head over heels for Caleb and Jessie.

My Review :

Devyn Dawson is a new author to me but I'm very glad that I gave her a chance.  I love all sorts of books but have lately been especially drawn to YA books that my daughter and I can read together & talk about :)

In The Light Tamer, Jessie begins in a pretty bleak mood.  From the abandonment by her father, the move to a new state sans friends & living with her grandma (excuse me, Ms. Gayle- she's too hip to be called grandma)  life is looking pretty sucky.  Thankfully grandma Ms. Gayle re-introduces her to Caleb, the pale sickly looking boy who saved her life as a child.  Caleb has turned from prune to hunk since they last met and the sparks literally are flying.    It is Caleb who tells Jessie about being a Light Tamer and what it entails.    They begin researching more about Light Tamers and Amber is thrown into the story..  I love Amber- her sharp wit just endears her to my heart .  What can I say? I love some sassy!

I felt the story moved along nicely and was a very quick read.  While some background was glossed over a bit, I feel confident that we will learn more as the trilogy progresses.  I especially loved the mythology that is thrown in!  A new type of paranormal story w/ romance at the heart of it is always a winner in my book!

Due to this being a Young Adult book, I decided to let Drama Queen (16) read it and give her input from the teen standpoint as well :

In the book, The Light Tamer by Devyn Dawson, the sense of comfort and love is brought to life.  I particularly liked this book because I liked the presentation of the characters and the whole story line.  I loved that you could get a sense of who each character was easily and it wasn’t a mystery of what they were thinking.  I liked the way my emotions developed as I fell in love with Caleb, Jessie, and Amber.   In the book, being a  “light tamer” won’t be an easy thing.   Lucky for Jessie being around so many others, it won’t be hard to overcome any evil wanting to do harm.  The raw and exciting emotion of how real Caleb and Jessie’s love became was very moving.  The Light Tamer was very entertaining throughout the entire book, but heart breaking at times.  I thought the suspense of what would happen next was very balanced with the enjoyment of what was happening at the moment.  The basic story line of two teenagers falling in love and being bonded together is something I enjoy reading, no matter how the story is written.  This book is a great example of why I love reading, because it makes you want to fall in love just like the characters did.
