Book Description:

Amie Wentworth writes paranormal romances, not because she is looking for a degree in ectoplasm, but because she’s got bills to pay. Ever since her parents’ car crash, she has been led a reclusive life and trusted books more than people. Not even a letter from her long-lost uncle, begging her to visit, gives Amie incentive for anything other than ire – until she is stabbed in an alley and brought back to life by a mysterious stranger. After crossing the Atlantic to her father’s homeland, Amie is dragged into the very sort of tale she is used to selling. Silver Hollow is a place of ancient traditions and supernatural dangers, where everything is the opposite of what it seems and few escape sane.

To make matters worse, the man who saved her life keeps turning up and her would-be-murderer is still at large.

But when she comes face to face with the ugly truth, will she too be sucked into her father’s madness? Or will she discover that madness is just another name for honesty?

My Thoughts :

Silver Hollow was an interesting read.  I can't say it was an easy read because you really need to concentrate on the book without distractions in order to stay with what's going on.  I had several times where I had to stop and re-read a page to make sure I understood it correctly.  That said, it was perfect! I would expect nothing less when reading about a whole different world.  Silver Hollow was very Alice in Wonderland-ish (yes , that's a word!) in that Amie is taken from the normal world with barn parties, friends and southern sayings  and dropped into this mysterious world with castles, gnomes and unicorns.  So while you needed to stay focused to stick with the book, you can really relate to Amie who is living it.   Learning that there were never truer words than when Uncle Henry told Amie "Never trust anyone", is a lesson I had to learn over and over during this book.  Maybe I'm too easy to trust ?  So many times the author tricked me into a lull, and I felt things were surely headed one way only to have the rug ripped out from under me and find myself turned around heading a completely different direction.

I laughed along with some of the antics, I shed a few tears at a certain part (which I will not reveal- no spoilers!) and I championed  the guy I wanted Amie to end up with.   Would she pick the reclusive Eddie  or Emrys- the one who saved her life.  While both were worthy "men", I definitely love Emrys the best.. Something about his tortured soul and his love for Amie just clutched at my heart.

Alas, when I began this review  I promised myself I wouldn't give spoilers.  So let me end by saying that this book is definitely worth the time.  If you are looking for something to sink into and get away completely from the real world- Silver Hollow is your ticket!

Book Description:

Abby Bartlett is the quintessential nice girl. Between teaching, volunteering, completing her PhD, and helping her best friend raise his daughter, Abby never gets the chance to be anything but nice. That is, until the all-wrong-for-her man she’s only ever known from afar starts daring her to simply take that chance for herself. His sage advice? Try something wild and fast.

 Preferably him.

An unbridled, hotshot attorney with a not-so-little black book, Connor Sullivan has earned himself quite the bad boy reputation. But in his defense, he’s a very conscientious one. He knows far too well that sometimes in life, love isn’t enough…or worse, not even a factor at all. To avoid that misery—and repel the drama—Connor always makes his one and only rule crystal clear right from the start. Absolutely nothing more than a month. Turns out, a whole lot can happen in one month.

Excerpt :

“Why you little—”
Connor launched at Abby as she shrieked out in laughter and tried ducking around him to make for the door.  Snatching her around the waist, he hoisted her cackling body over his shoulder and upended her back onto the bed.  “You set me up.”
Now unliddable, her giggles effervesced, giving zero credence to her perfectly scandalized denials.  He trapped her under him and buried his grin against the curve of her neck, feeling disproportionately victorious at the gasp she couldn’t contain when he skimmed his lips over her collarbone.
The woman was getting to him.  This time, when his lips found her soft skin again, it was with purpose.  “You planted that wicked little bag-o-fun there for me to find, admit it.”
She gave an Oscar-worthy gasp at the accusation. “What?  What possible reason would I have had to do that?”
“To drive me up the wall?  Send me bursting through my zipper?”  He nipped at her earlobe playfully.  “Though I guess I should be flattered to be the reason you bought all that stuff.”
The cutest derisive snort he’d ever heard shot out of her like a torpedo with impeccable aim.  “Breaking news, Connor: scientists have in fact discovered that the earth doesn’t revolve around you.  Women buy toys for themselves all the time.”
He nearly bit off his tongue to avoid even thinking about Abby having any sort of toy-based fun.  “I still call foul.  When you and I agreed to this who’ll-beg-first stint, you didn’t say you’d be weaponizing your attacks.”
“Weapons?”  She blinked innocently.  “You make them sound so sinister.  I’d say they’re more like…private tools.  Survival tools, if you will.  For my time here.  Naturally, you were never meant to see them.”
Bull.  Next, you’ll tell me the snowflake masquerading as underwear in that bag is worn strictly for comfort.  Hell, I’ve seen more fabric on the teeny doilies in Skylar’s toy tea sets—”
“Aw, I remember those,” she cut in softly with a smile.  “She used to go on and on about how her ‘bestest Uncle Connor’ hosted the fanciest dress-up tea parties.”
“I wore suits,” he clarified gruffly, “and don’t change the subject.  Why buy sexy lingerie if not to have them be seen?”
By me.  He didn’t have to say it out loud, they were both thinking it.  And his ego was celebrating it.
“Easy access,” she eventually answered, straight-faced.
His imagination went nuts.  Picturing Abby wearing the microscopic scrap of white lace he saw earlier for private ‘easy access’ unhinged him.  He shackled her wrists above her head with one hand and began tickling her ribs.  “Another foul.”
“Stop!” she screeched and dissolved into a breathless puddle of mirth.  “Okay, I admit it!  It was a dirty, dirty foul on my part.  You should definitely take a free throw shot.”
He paused, wondering where she was going with this.
She pointed to the trash can.  “There’s the basket; my new panties can be the ball…since yours are clearly in a twist.”
Incredulous, he dialed up the tickle torture to merciless.
Her squealing ‘I-take-it-backs’ became unintelligible as she wriggled and squirmed and bucked until soon, he was fairly certain he was suffering more than she was.
Breathing hard, he released her wrists and rolled onto his back beside her.  “You’re planning to drive me completely crazy these next few weeks, aren’t you?”
Limbs all akimbo, head dangling off the bed, she heaved between breaths, “Like you wouldn’t believe.”

Review & #giveaway -- The Mark of Abel by Viola Ryan

Holy Hell Tour

Today is a stop on the Holy Hell tour for Viola Ryan's first book in a new series The Mark of Abel.  Let me just say that the tour is named well because Holy Hell is it good..  Read below for more on the book, my thoughts on it & an awesome giveaway !

The Mark of Abel
-The Mark of Abel Series , Book 1

Viola Ryan

Publication Date:  Dec. 21, 2012 (ebook)
Paperback  due out September 2013

Length: 348 glorious pages
ASIN: B00B0FSH9A

Book Description:

Is a frustrated artist Lucifer’s ticket back to heaven or will falling in love with her reawaken the compassion that got him expelled?

Lucifer is fed up with humanity. He created hell to deter evil, but man’s inhumanity is only escalating. He just wants to return home to heaven, but ever since that little problem in the Garden of Eden, the Pearly Gates remain firmly shut to him. It doesn’t help that he’s the first vampire, an abomination in God’s sight.

Fortunately, two thousand years ago Lucifer’s estranged brother, Jesus, gave him a prophecy. To fulfill it, all Lucifer has to do is find the right artist, study her artwork and the path back to heaven will be revealed. The artist even bears a symbol so he knows who she is. Too bad she is murdered every time he finds her.

Janie’s a frustrated artist and college art teacher who wants two things—a guy she can show her paintings to and a night without nightmares. Each nightmare plagues her until she paints it. She doesn’t realize these paintings are key to unlocking her destiny, one that could redeem the original fallen angel.

My Thoughts :

:sigh:  I don't even know where to begin.   Lucifer.. ie. Satan, the Devil, evil guy with horns and a pitchfork?   This book throws everything for a loop.  Lucifer or Luke as he's going by nowadays, is actually a vampire and good guy.  Mind boggling.  This is one of those books that I was afraid to write a review on for fear of spilling all the good parts!   I just want to babble endlessly about Luke , Eve, Janie and everything.  But I will hold myself in and say that I felt Viola did a wonderful job of putting together this story.  I was pulled in deeply to the plot and loved every little detail.

The Mark of Abel  was a well paced book.  I never felt like I was being rushed thru a scene.. Nor did I want to skim thru to a better part.  Every page was good. Your concept of good and evil, Heaven and Hell will be thrown for a loop.  Everything we have known all our lives about God & the Devil, way back to the garden of Eden are completely changed with a tiny twist that makes you really think.  Is the Devil the evil we were all taught to believe, or is he in fact just misunderstood?

I give this one 10 golden stars and highly recommend you give it a try!  In fact, I am going to go sit down and reread it right now!  I simply cannot wait for the next in the series to come out!

About the Author:

A very good friend of Viola Ryan in high school said, “You don’t think outside the box. You blow the thing up.” Sometimes boxes need exploding. That’s why she’s here. She has a whole bag of C4 and isn’t afraid to use it. She’s blessed with people who treasure her eccentricities or at least put up with them.

Sometimes the box can be a cozy place. Without some sort of stability, her two daughters’ and her life would be unmanageable. That stability comes from her husband. He’s the rock holding her family together.

On the flip side, his career is anything but stable. He’s a Chief Marine Safety Technician in the US Coast Guard. They’ve lived from Kittery, Maine to Yorktown, Virginia. Fortunately, the moves have all been on the east coast. Then again, the Coast Guard tends to guard the coast.

Her oldest daughter (16) was born on Cape Cod, not far from Plymouth. Massachusetts. Her youngest (12) was born in Yorktown, Virginia, down the road from Williamsburg. Viola jokes they’re doing the colonial America tour.

Character Interview @AuthorVSNelson

Hey guys!  Virginia Nelson is joining us today and offered up a character interview from her Sekhmet's Guardians series.   I have read her character interviews before and they are soo much fun!  I hope you enjoy as much as I did!

It’s a little before 8 in the morning when I walk into the Guardian’s handout. I pour myself a cup coffee when Gabriel and Raphael walk in.

“That stuff will put hair on your chest,” says the Guardian’s leader, Gabriel.

I laugh but finishing filling my cup.

“Don’t pay any attention to him, V; he’s always grumpy this time of day.”

Don’t I know it! So are the two of you ready for this? Momma Chaos doesn’t wait forever.

Ready as we’ll ever be,” says Raphael.

They both take a chair, cross their legs and wait on me to finish. I park myself on the loveseat and pull out my steno pad which has the questions I want to ask them on it.

V: Gabriel, why don’t you start off by telling us how your life has changed in the past couple of years?

G: Well for starters, two plus years ago, I like my brethren here was single. Now all that has changed… It all started when we decided to least our Lake Michigan estate to the British band the Immortals. Alice, the lead singer’s lifemate planned on staying her while they went on tour. She invited her best friend to come for a visit to keep her company.

Gabe takes a deep breath and repositions his long legs before continuing.

G: I met Jennifer for the first time the night of their welcome to the U.S. Tour party.

R: Gabe, I wouldn’t call that a meeting.

Gabe laughs.

G: You’re right – it wasn’t a meeting… more like a collision course. Jennifer wanted nothing to do with me.

R: You can say that again!

G: Watch it!

Raphael relaxes after Gabe laughs. I can tell Raphael loves antagonizing Gabriel but is watching his words carefully.

G: Anyway as I was saying before I was rudely interrupted. Jennifer wasn’t too enthusiastic with my presence.

R: Maybe if you hadn’t drooled all over her…

Gabe cuts his eyes at Raphael again. I’m not sure if he’s teasing or serious at this point.

G: Cut the crap, will you? … I’m trying to tell a story here.

Raphael holds up his hands in self defense.

V: Ok guys, enough will the teasing. I’ve got an interview to do… please.

G/R in unison, “Sorry V.”

V: Ok so I got it, Jennifer wasn’t too enthralled with you. Don’t know why, I find you rather handsome and intriguing. Who wouldn’t want to spend an eternity in your arms or by your side?

Raphael whispers under his breath: “Jennifer.” This time I’m the one who cuts her eyes to Raphael.

G: Thanks V, but ya know I can be a bit intimidating.

V: Really, I never would have known… Could it be your size? What are you now 6’8” and 275-280 pounds and Jennifer is what 4’ 11”, a hundred pounds soaking wet?

G: So anyway, to make a very long story short, it took us a while to get it together. We just had some things to work out.

V: Oh yeah, like what?

R: Like a husband. (he snickers)

G: Yeah, bring up the asshole, why don’t you?

R: Hey, it’s an interview.

V: Ok guys this isn’t getting us anywhere. Raphael you want to tell me what you had to do with Jennifer and Gabriel getting together?

R: I’d be happy to. You see I was the catalyst in their relationship. I’m Gabe’s best friend as you know and I was becoming quite close to Jen… especially since she wanted nothing to do with him. Anyway, Jen and I spent a lot of time together, which actually put Gabe in touch with his inner self. Gabe had been alone for so long he didn’t even know how to court a woman. I had to give him instructions on that more than once. I’m happy to say it all worked out for both of them in the long run.

V: But what about you? I seem to remember you were quite taken by Jennifer yourself. Didn’t that leave you out in the cold?

R: For a while, but I came to love Jennifer as the sister I never had. I always knew I needed to protect her… just didn’t know why. And I’m happy to report I’m no longer out in the cold. I’ve found what I was looking for.

V: Really, and who is that?

R: Jennifer’s sister, Jessica.

V: Really and how did all that come about. I don’ remember anyone mentioning Jennifer’s sister in Eternal Lovers.

R: Your right V, no one including Jennifer knew she had a sister for quite some time. That little fact comes about in book two of the series, Eternal Nights, which is due to be released on May 1st.

V: So the second book is about you and your eternal quest for love?

R: Right again. Of course there is a whole lot more in that book. For example, Set’s Legions pull off some pretty nasty stuff… so much so we had to reactivate our recruitment policy. The grounds are now inhabited by two hundred recruits in addition to all of us.

G: Don’t forget to mention that Ronan finds love and one of Set’s members turns against them.

R: I was just getting to that.

V: Ok guys, you’re doing it again. Tell you what, I’m going to call it quits here and shoot what I have over to Momma Chaos and send along a couple of snippets of both books.  That should give her readers a good look into the series. You two can finish your bickering without me.

SNIPPET from ETERNAL LOVERS

She stomped up to Raphael, grabbed hold of his hand, pulling him into the other room.
“Ah… Ah… Jennifer, where are we going?”
Looking around, she realized she had drug Raphael to the one room, now empty of furniture, set aside for dancing. They were standing in the center of the room with couples dancing all around them. She reached up and put both of her hands around Raphael’s neck and demanded, “Dance with me.”
Puzzled as he must have been, he placed his hands on the small of her back and began swaying with her to the music. She laid her head against his chest. God, it felt good being so close to him–safe.
“You know all you had to do was ask.  I’d never turn down a lady in distress. I’m flattered but curious as to what brought all this on?”
“I guess I’m just over reacting, but there was a guy in there…” She motioned with her head towards the other room. “...who was giving me the creeps. Evidently, he was staring at me while I was playing backgammon with Alice; well at least that’s what Marie said.”
“Jennifer, I’m sure you are use to having men stare at you. You are a beautiful woman. I believe I told you earlier you look enchantingly beautiful tonight.”
She blushed. Raphael could charm anyone.
“It wasn’t just that he was staring at me. I left the room and went to get a drink and the next thing I knew he was leaning into me. He had me pinned against the bar. Lord, I swear he was sniffing my hair. I don’t know if he’s drunk, high or what but he really scared the living daylights out of me.”
“Oh I see… and now you want the security guard and all this time I thought it was my charm that held you captive? I thought maybe you missed me… So what did this would be stalker look like?”
“Yes, no, hell I don’t know, all I could think of was finding you.”
“Jennifer, what did he look like, I’ll go find him and have a few words with him. If he’s drunk or on drugs, I’ll escort him out of here. I can’t have one of Alice’s guests being all upset. Now can I?”
Racing through her memory she tried to picture him in her mind. She couldn’t tell Raphael that he was a delectable yet scary looking hunk with the most intriguing eyes she had ever seen, could she?
“He’s dark haired, yeah black hair, really tall, taller than you, oh yeah, and he’s wearing a black suit with a black shirt and of all things sunglasses. He came to the party with four girls. I think maybe he’s a pimp? Hell, I don’t know what I think.”

SNIPPET FROM BOOK TWO – ETERNAL NIGHTS

Gabe stood in the doorway, leaning against the door frame while watching several of them pace back and forth like caged beasts. Two other men stood opposite one another, fangs bared and squaring off at each other. He sensed their high emotions. What the hell is going on? These seasoned soldiers shouldn’t be acting like this. He’d never had a problem with any of them before.
He cleared his throat. “Gentleman, you want to take it down a notch.”
The two who were facing off at each other looked over at him. Then one quickly snapped back at him, “It’s none of your damn business!” The other one flipped him off.
The others in the room gathered around the two that were facing off, anticipating a fight about to break out. The way they were acting, they didn’t care who fought whom, they were itching for some kind of action.
Gabriel walked up to the man who had spouted off to him and bared his own fangs.
“You, sit now!”
Then he shoved him into a nearby chair.
He turned to the other man and pointed at another chair; far enough away from the first man so they couldn’t reach one another, “You, over there!”
“In fact, every one of you fuckers, sit down! And someone tell me what the hell is going on in here!”
Gabriel’s voice echoed through the walls and throughout the tunnel system. The eleven men in the room all looked at each other in disbelief. About that time five more guards, hearing Gabriel, came running into the room. The aggression on the five entering the room said they were ready for a brawl. Lance who also heard him from his office came running in behind the five men. He pushed his way through the crowd blocking the door and asked Gabriel what was going on.

BIO:

Being a Native American woman and a Scorpio, author V.S. Nelson has always had a fondness for history, mythology, the occult, and the unexplained events which have occurred on this world we call home. It was no wonder she found herself writing a paranormal series.
Raised on authors like H.G. Wells and Jules Verne and coming from a long line of oral storytellers, Ms. Nelson work has been defined as innovative and fresh. She will take you by the hand and lead you into the depths of her imagination as if you are sitting next to her on the couch one minute and alive within her fantasy world the next.
She has always enjoyed reading stories with strong relationships and happy-ever-after-endings and it is reflected in her work. Even her commercial fiction, Sins of a Man, the Memoirs of a Mafia Hit Man, is layered with romantic elements. I’ve heard her say she is in love with love more than once and that too is echoed in her stories.
Landing in Arizona, after an exciting teaching career, which took her to the Middle East for several years, she lives in Arizona where she spends most of her time making love to her computer while writing, editing or researching, seven to ten hours a day. The days she’s not writing, you will find her with her critique partners, attending or presenting a workshop or at a RWA (Romance Writers of America) meeting.
