Sabaska's Tale
(Tales of the Travelers seris, Book 1)
by:  J.A. Campbell

Published : Untold Press ( July 2013 )
ASIN :  B00DSOCNWS

Length : 224 pages
Genre:  Young Adult , Fantasy, Horses

Book Description:

To Anna,  horses were more than a fascination, they were everything.  Luckily, she had the opportunity to spend every summer on her grandmother's horse ranch in Colorado.  Life was perfect, until she received the devastating news that her grandmother had been tragically killed.  Anna knew she was the only member of her family who could take over the ranch and hopefully find new homes for her grandmother's beloved Arabians.

Anna wasn't alone for long.  Her grandmother had hired a local teenage boy to help tend the horses for the summer.  Anna didn't stand a chance against Cody's quiet charm and the two rapidly become friends.  However, even with the responsibilities of the ranch, Anna quickly discovers the secrets her grandmother had been hiding and a legacy that sends her on an adventure she never thought possible.  An adventure int he saddle of a horse that wasn't a horse at all.   Sabaska, her grandmother's favorite Arabian, was a Traveler; a magicaly being that could travel between worlds.  With Anna at the reins, they find themselves trapped in a fight against evil with the highest of stakes...  Their very survival.

Footsteps came down the hall toward her grandma’s bedroom. Anna’s hands shook. They would have heard her footsteps if the carpet hadn’t muffled them. She crept away from the door and slipped into the bathroom. A small window with frosted panes opened on the roof. Though she had thought it odd at the time, her grandma had shown her an escape route. “Anna, in case there is a fire and you can’t get out the door, you can go out through this window. Come on, follow me. It’s safe.” She set the shotgun down across the sink and climbed on the toilet and slid the window open. The bright moon clearly lit her path. She climbed into the warm, dry air and reached back for her gun. Just to be sure, she shut the window behind her, and then noticed a curious thing. It locked from outside. What had Grandma been involved with? Anna latched the window and crouched, holding the shotgun to her chest. It was one thing to follow her grandma onto the roof in broad daylight, it was quite another to escape intruders in the middle of the night. The light from the moon didn’t seem so bright now. Shadows danced everywhere. She wished the shotgun had a sling. She considered staying hidden by the window. They wouldn’t get through the window without breaking it. One of the horses screamed. Anna’s blood ran cold, but it broke her out of her crouch. Before she could think better of it, she crawled across the roof, being sure to stay in the shadows. The shingles scraped her knuckles where she clutched the gun. They weren’t doing her jeans or her knees any favors either. “Damn it.” The harsh whisper echoed in the night. Anna flattened herself against the roof, heart trying to climb out of her chest. The next muttered curse might have come from the barn. Yet she heard both so clearly, they could have been right beside her. It must have been a trick of the night air. Anna clenched her lips tight, smothering a whimper and started crawling again. At the trellis, she paused, trying to decide what to do next. “Maybe the Traveler is gone, M’lord,” a man said underneath her. “It won’t leave the girl.” The second man spoke. She knew that voice. Blue shirts and mean sports cars flashed through her brain. “The girl isn’t here,” another man said. “She’s here.” He sounded very confident. “Just be ready to track them if they get a chance to run.” The men faded out of hearing range. You have to get off this roof! She tried to get herself to move, knowing she wouldn’t get a better chance. A quiet, encouraging nicker caught Anna’s attention and a dark shape in a clump of evergreens moved slightly. The faint outline of horse dissolved into the shadows. What the hell? With no time to figure it out, she carefully scooted to the edge of the roof and climbed down onto the reinforced trellis. It was awkward with one hand occupied by the shotgun but the shadows hid hid the trellis from view and the foot and handholds were predictable. The faint scent of crushed leaves tickled her nose and she fought a sneeze. That would be just perfect; reaching the bottom without falling only to have a sneeze give her away. She made it, though she breathed hard and her limbs shook–only partially from exertion.Okay, now what?
The dark shape moved again. If she could get to the horse maybe she could get away. Horses could go a lot of places trucks couldn’t. Maybe she could find a way to call the police. Of course she left her cell phone behind, but Sherrie’s neighbors were far enough away to be safe and would let her use their phone. Anna checked for the intruders. Nothing moved so she darted across the open ground and into the bush. She hoped her sudden appearance didn’t startle the horse into making noise. The horse stayed silent, bumping her head against Anna’s arm in a reassuring manner. Sabaska, of course. Why would the horse hide in a clump of trees waiting for her to climb off a roof? Sabaska turned to let her climb on her back. She leaned the shotgun against a tree and scrambled ungracefully onto the horse. Sabaska edged closer to the gun without being asked and Anna picked it up, not sure how to carry it, ride bareback and direct her horse, but Sabaska didn’t seem to care. Anna got settled and grabbed a hold of the horse’s mane while cradling the gun awkwardly. “M’lord,” one of the men called more loudly. Sabaska snorted, tossed her head, and started moving, slowly at first, and then her muscles bunched. “No,” Anna whispered. The horse ignored her and she held on, stifling scream as the little horse burst from the trees into a dead gallop. “M’lord! There!” “Catch them before they Travel!” She clung to Sabaska’s back as the horse galloped toward a fence. Needing both hands to stay astride, she tossed the shotgun to the ground and held on. Anna screamed as Sabaska leapt the fence. In the air, she came off Sabaska’s back, but the little horse landed underneath her and did a funny jig to keep Anna from falling. The men shouted behind her, but as Sabaska ran, the air grew muffled and dense and the voices faded. Anna thought she might be passing out and clutched the horse tighter. Sabaska slowed and trees scraped against her legs and arms. Leafy trees. Cold frosted her breath and she started to shake. No deciduous forest surrounded her Grandma’s property and though it could get cold in the summer in Colorado, there wasn’t usually snow on the ground. Overwhelmed, she stopped thinking and clung to Sabaska’s back while the little horse pushed through the trees. Anna hoped she knew where she was going. The numb, suffocating feeling came and went several times that night. Anna thought she saw the sun high in the sky a few times, but when Sabaska finally did stop, the sky had just begun to lighten. Incomprehensible trees surrounded them. She blinked at the red blur of leaves and smooth silver bark and then passed out. In her dreams, an unseen entity chased her until a distant voice woke her. “Sabaska! What are you doing?” Her horse snorted and though Anna wanted to sit up, exhaustion sent her back to sleep.

Excerpt :

Damon knelt before them.
"Will she get better? Will she…" Prince’s voice trailed off.
Her eyes locked on Damon’s face as he regarded her thoughtfully. His hand came up and she flinched as it rested on the top of her head. No pain came. She felt…nothing. If he tried to speak to her, she couldn’t hear him.
"No," he said finally. "There has been damage to the brain. There is bleeding and swelling inside."
Prince’s cry startled her, almost as much as the sudden clutching of his arms around her. "Can you do anything," he choked out. "Please, I am responsible. I can not…I will pay–"
Damon chuckled. "It is not your life that needs saving." He stared at Prince for a long moment. "I see." He shook his head. "Perhaps I was wrong and she isn’t the one. I read so few pages of the book." He turned to Kei.
"No," the Fey said. "I don’t remember."
"Pity."
"Dragos, I beg of you," Prince began again.
"The Elven prince begs, and for a human. How very far you have fallen." He looked down at her again.
Blinking up at him, she tried to get her scattered thoughts to work. She’d barely comprehended what he’d said past the inference she was dying. The words sent an icy chill through her body. Terror crawled through her, speeding her heart. Sweat broke out on her forehead and all she could hear was her increasingly frantic breathing.Kei startled her, leaning forward over her to press a kiss to her forehead. She tilted her head back, trying to see him.
"I’m with you."
Damon’s fingers brushes her cheek, drawing her attention back to him. "Do you wish to live, young Arowyn?"
Words refused to pass her lips. Somehow she managed to nod. She didn’t know what the cost would be, certainly there would be one. Right then, she didn’t care. Rot it all, she wanted to live!
"Very well." He regarded her thoughtfully for a moment. "Dragos rarely heal others. I do know the magic, but it is difficult. Your story has barely begun. I find I would actually attempt it, just to see what you might become and how it will unfold."
He sat back and gestured to the pile of furs next to him. "Lay her down. This will take some time and I’ll need no distractions."
Prince carefully set her amongst the furs, arranging her arms so her hands rested on her chest, tucking stray locks of hair behind her ears. Leaning forward, he rested his forehead for a moment against hers.
"Get well, Arowyn."
Bo appeared next, smoothing the hair back on the top of her head and squeezing one of her hands. "You can do this, pup."
Garen pressed his wet nose against her temple. If he spoke, she didn’t hear him.
Kei pushed the wolf aside and took her face in his hands. His eyes glowed with that strange orange inner light. Tears streaked down his cheeks. Despite the awkward position he leaned down and held her close for a moment. "Remember our promises," he whispered in her. "I’m always with you." He choked on a sob and squeezed her tightly again. "I love you," he whispered fiercely before quickly pulling away.
She wished she could speak. More than anything, she wanted to tell him she loved him, too. She wanted to tell all of them she did. Tears filled her eyes and slid down her face.Damon knelt beside her and turned her head to look at him. "I will do what I can," he said.
"However I can’t guarantee it will work. I have never tried to heal a human before. Understand?"
She managed a faint nod and pressed her quivering lips together.
He glanced up and gestured the others away. "Stand back and be silent." His eyes found hers again. "Don’t fight me this time, little one. Fall into my eyes…"
Blinking once more to clear the tears away, she tried to do as he asked. Damon’s eyes were strange enough she found it not difficult to stare. They had vertical slits and no whites at all. The iridescent color was a wash of blue-green with streaks of gold and red. The colors began to swirl, making her dizzy as she tried to watch them. A comforting thrum emanated from his chest, soothing her as his power wrapped around her. Her thoughts drifted into nothing.

Dragonthology Release Tour - Interview w/ Jay Wilburn !

Hello again guys!  Today, I am so happy to be a part of Untold Press' release tour of Dragonthology!  I have a deep seated love of Dragons and can't wait to get my hands on this!  One of my favorite things about anthologies is that you get a little hint into several different authors writing styles.  I've found some great new authors by reading anthologies..  Be sure to stay 'tuned' after the interview for more on the book and each of the authors!! And be sure to check out the giveaway as well!

My interview was with author Jay Wilburn.  Enjoy !!

1. Let’s start out easy.. Tell us a little bit about your book.

I have a piece in Dragonthology with Untold Press. Each story explores dragons from a different genre or style.

2. What inspired you to write this story?

My story “Egg Hunt” follows a smuggler transporting dragon eggs through space. I followed the tradition of grand science fiction from the late seventies and early eighties. Hard science fiction presented characters with problems that led to more problems once they were solved. I really enjoyed combining these elements in this story

Space, dragon eggs? I'm hooked already!
3. What is the main lesson that your book is trying to teach?

Compassion can make things more complicated, but sometimes it is part of the solution.

4. Moving on to your writing career, how long have you been writing?

Most of my life badly and secretly. My first published story was in 2010. My first novel was published summer of 2012. I’m working on achieving a professional career in writing.

Congrats!  Persistence pays off !  Good luck with your career :)

5. Did you always dream to become an author?

It was the original dream back when astronaut and superhero were still viable options. I went through a long period of surviving life instead of living with any passion. Now that I’m serious about writing with every spare moment I do so obsessively.

I sincerely miss the days when superhero was a viable option!
6. I’m always curious whether or not authors read the same types of books that they write. So tell us, what book genres do you love to read? to write?

I write horror and speculative fiction. I experiment out in other genres to stretch my ability and options.

I write so much that I have to make myself take time to read. I tend to read a lot of nonfiction including biographies, history, and social commentary. I read for reviews with Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing. This includes many genre of fiction.

7. What are you reading right now?

Right now I’m reading an alternate history, Civil War novella by K. A. Harris called Huckleberry’s Hail Mary.

8. Have any particular authors inspired you to write? If so, can you name one and what you like about their style?

I’ve read a good bit of work by Chris Larsen including his forthcoming novel with Postmortem Press Losing Touch. He combines history and creative ideas in a way that makes me want to improve my quality of work.

In the same way, I read a short story by Doug Murano called “The Chopping Block” that let me know that apocalyptic short stories should strive for much more.

9. Do you have any upcoming projects?

I’m shopping a novel called Time Eaters that combines time travel and apocalyptic horror. I’m working on my next novel The Great Interruption that creates an analogy of growing up with an event that removes people from the world for a time.

Good luck with your next novels!!  Thanks so much for stopping by today !
