From the bestselling author of the THE SOULKEEPERS comes a new series about dark magic, redemption and an unusual theater with life or death stakes…

Finn Wager’s luck has run out. Arrested for the one crime he didn’t actually commit, he’s forced to finish his education at an alternative school. The Revelations Institute is an upscale, private reform school with a 100% success rate. Delinquents go in and model citizens come out. But students who don’t perform to expectations disappear. And although their bodies return model citizens, their minds are hardly their own. Something evil lurks inside Revelations, and if Finn and his new friend Hope can't find a way to stop it, they’ll risk more than their lives. The repercussions could cost them their souls.

An interview with Finn Wager, main character of Wager’s Price

What’s your name and how old are you?
Finn Wager. I’m fifteen and a sophomore at Beaverton High School.
Do you have a nickname?
My best friend, Mike, calls me Finn Shady, but it’s a joke. There’s nothing shady
or thug-like about me. My ADHD meds make it hard for me to gain weight, so I’m
smaller than most of my friends, which means most adults tend to either overlook
me or underestimate me. I use this to me advantage.

What do you like to do in your free time?
Play video games. The one good thing about having a father who works all the
time is I have plenty of money to feed my habit. I built a Holographic Omni
Recognition Unit I call HORU, a completely interactive artificial intelligence that
amps up all my Holo games. I take HORU with me wherever I go using a
specially designed earpiece.

HORU helps you with more than video games, doesn’t she? Tell me about
Deviant Joe.

Who told you about Deviant Joe?

We’re all friends here. It’s safe to share.
Okay, okay, my friends and I have this thing we do where we use HORU to
record epic pranks and upload them to our channel on the Internet. We have a
huge following, but no one knows it’s us because we’re always careful to conceal
our faces. I’m the mastermind. I come up with the pranks. My friend Mike, he’s
the muscle. He’s big and he’s already driving, which comes in handy because
our parents absolutely cannot know what we’re up to. Jayden is our gasoline. He
always figures out a way to take the prank up a notch. The only problem is,
sometimes Jayden goes too far and things get dangerous. That’s why we have
Wyatt. Wyatt is our brakes. He keeps us from doing anything that could get us or
somebody else hurt or even killed.

You called yourself the mastermind. What word would you say best
describes your abilities?

Scrappy.

What is your deepest fear?
The only thing worse than not being able to keep my friends safe would be
knowing that I am the reason they are in danger. That’s my darkest fear.
What’s next for you after Wager’s Price?

I made a mistake, okay? I did something bad and someone I loved paid the price.
I’m going to make it right. I’m going to put everything back where it belongs. I
promise you.

Guest Post + #Giveaway : Love & Justice by Rachel Mannino

Today I'm thrilled to offer a guest post by author Rachel Mannino!   Enjoy!

I had a dream
By: Rachel Mannino

No, literally, I had a dream. That was what prompted me to write Love or Justice. I woke up one morning, fascinated by a dream where I was a witness to a crime, and I fell in love with the officer protecting me, but I was being hunted by the criminal I was supposed to testify against. I thought it would make a great novel. I had never written a novel before in my life, but I could see the whole story in my head. So later that night, I sat down and started writing. It took me a little over a year to complete the first draft.

A dream also prompted me to write my second novel, Fractal, which will be published in the spring. I was traveling in space with my sister and we were on a grand adventure. I was afraid at the end of the adventure that I would lose her and she would die. The storyline slowly developed into the story of Anna, who doesn’t know she’s the long lost ruler of a ruined planet until her people land on Earth to try and take her home. Anna, her little brother, and her best friend Hannah, leave Earth to journey to the abandoned planet, hoping to save it.

Dreams are a wonderful creative space. There are no rules. Things don’t have to quite make sense, and you’re presented with powerful images that can stick with you all day, or for a lifetime. Certain images and moments can prove to be inspirational for a novel. Of course, you have to find a way to apply some rules and logic to an otherwise chaotic stream of visions. You also need to tease out the heart of the story. Laurie and Dante might be on the run from a mob boss, but what they’re really fighting against is the justice system that demands an enormous sacrifice to put a criminal behind bars. They can choose to stay in their cozy sanctuary, but can they just stand by while a dangerous killer goes free?

A dream can be a wonderful basis for a novel, you just have to add a few more layers of heart before you get to the real story.

And now, more about the novel inspired by a dream!  Be sure to enter the giveaway below as well!!

Laurie Shelton is the only person alive who can identify Hawaii’s most notorious mob boss…

After stumbling into a deadly kidnapping, Laurie’s life is in grave danger, and it falls to US Marshal Dante Stark to keep her safe until she testifies against Kaimi Quamboa—assuming he can be captured.

Dante knows he’ll lose his job if he becomes romantically involved with a witness…

But when he has to comfort her through constant nightmares, he finds it nearly impossible to fight his attraction to the beautiful, strong young woman he is sworn to protect. Laurie feels it too, but aware she’s in a high-stress situation and that when the danger is past she’ll never see Dante again, she tries to ignore his easygoing smile and the security he offers.
Laurie and Dante are forced to flee again…

When Kaimi’s men descend on their hideaway, they escape to a second safe house, only to be tracked down there as well. Dante now knows there’s a mole inside the US Marshal Service, and the only thing left to do is disappear. Kaimi will never stop looking for Laurie, and if he’s caught, showing up to testify could be the last thing she ever does. With each choice as dangerous as the next, Dante and Laurie must confront the boundaries of what they’re willing to sacrifice, and which is more important…

Guest Post from author Brooklyn Ann - Conjuring Destiny #Giveaway

conjuring destiny tour banner

Hi all!  Today I'd like to welcome  Brooklyn Ann, author to the Brides of Prophecy series ! Brooklyn is here to tell us more about Xochitl, the star of Conjuring Destiny.

The most difficult heroine I've ever written.

Xochitl Leonine, (Whose name is pronounced So-She) is probably the most challenging character I've ever written.

Quick description: she is the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of the heavy metal band, Rage of Angels, she possesses supernatural abilities, mainly communicating with cats and manifesting fire. She is biologically incapable of fear and for some reason (explained at the end of the story) her back aches when she gets angry.

So, clearly she's not human. But she doesn't know what she is.

Her life has also been touched by pain and tragedy. She spent most of her childhood alone and bullied because others around her sensed she was different. Because of this, guys treated her like the plague while all the other girls her age were experiencing first love.

Even worse, her mother died when she was seventeen.

Despite so much strife, she remains unrelentingly cheerful … and curious about everything.

She lives and breathes music, something that not only brings her joy, but was also the key to making her first real friends. All she wants is for her and her band, Rage of Angels, to succeed enough that she can play music full time for a living.

But fate has more in store for her than that...

One of the hardest things to keep in mind was writing a character who is incapable of fear. When a scary bad guy approaches, instead of going "Eeek!" like a normal person, Xochitl will either charge headlong into fighting him, or if she thinks she won't win the fight, she'll run, though to avoid unpleasantness, not due to terror.

She is also a frustrating combination of knowledge and naivety. She's well read, and an accomplished linguist, but she's extremely ignorant of her own abilities and how the world works. This bites her in the butt in this book.

And maybe the worst thing of all, she insisted in speaking to me in the First Person POV. Since it's my first time writing that style, I had to go through major revisions to get it right. Ugh.

Despite all of the frustrating challenges with Xochitl, she was also a lot of fun to write, and I do hope you enjoy her story.

And now more about the book :

conjuring destiny
Famous rock star, Xochitl Leonine, has dreamt of a world with two moons where a black cloaked man beckons her. One Halloween night, she meets the mysterious stranger of her dreams… literally... and their shared dance becomes a rendezvous in a place of endless night.

Zareth Amotken has no idea how important Xochitl’s heavy metal band is to her. As an immortal sorcerer, he doesn’t care. He has one goal: to find the prophesied savior of his world. Her voice holds the power to bring back his world’s vanished sun.

Xochitl’s compassion urges her to help in any way she can. Yet learning the mysteries of her past causes conflict with her future in music. Her destiny in his world and her obligations to her band pull her in opposite directions. How can she long for one while the other is so dire?

As Zareth introduces her to his people and teaches her to control her powers, she aches for his enchanting kiss. Zareth tries to resist, for their passion will unleash serious consequences, both political and magical. As the time to fulfill her destiny draws closer, she must choose between her heart, her duty, and her friends. The wrong choice could ruin everything.

But if Zareth’s evil half brother succeeds in taking control of her for his own ends, he will take away her choices… and destroy the world?

Guest Post by @MarataEros - author of The Token 9 #Giveaway

Today I thought I'd share a guest post from the author of The Token 9: Chet Sinclair.  Marata Eros is here to share a love letter to reviewers.  As a reviewer myself, Thank you :) Afterwards, we'll take a look at her book and there's a nice giveaway as well!  Yay!

Ode to the Three Star Reviewer

This is a love letter of sorts. Anyone who's ever bothered to check out my blog, Facebook or twitter sites knows that I'm positive, assertive and command a great respect for my readers (and all other supporters). Some authors won't make the ballsy move to say anything about reviewers because we're terrified of offending anyone by accident and getting labeled as one of “those” authors. Well, no need to worry about that, guys. I'm not one of “those.” I'm a normal chick whose day job is writing. I'm a wife, a mother of four, and daydream from mind to paper. It's not complicated. I'm not here to spread negativity so rest assured, the words that follow are positive, truthful and from the heart. It's all good.

This month I'd like to touch on reviewers. I love my readers; I am one. I read about 3-4 books per week and understand my taste intimately, select accordingly and won't go past 10% [eReader] on any work unless it engages me. Since I'm a niche writer... well, that typically means I don't like “broad” work. However, there's exceptions, like BEAUTIFUL DISASTER. I loved that work and its wide appeal cannot be denied. The one that took the rug out from underneath me was the wonderfully dark, poignant and clearly controversial CJ Roberts masterpiece, CAPTIVE in the DARK. Wow. Just- wow.

So- I understand your pain. I read, I select, and I... critique.

What? You don't like everything you read? The short answer is: no.

However, as a writer, your constructive criticisms are helpful. I won't lie: I adore the fives stars, the one stars are tough... the three stars are [typically] informative. As an artist I don't “learn” much from that wide pendulum, though I appreciate every review. Appreciate doesn't mean like or dislike, it's a nod to the time it took that reader to voice their thoughts in a tangible way. Stephen King once said: The worst advice? ‘Don’t listen to the critics.’ I think that you really ought to listen to the critics, because sometimes they’re telling you something is broken that you can fix.”

Okay, King is The Master. Since we write, we need to listen to our readers so we can continue to improve our work: the craft of writing. Everyone's time is valuable and I don't ever dismiss readers who share their thoughts.

I love hearing what resonated in my work; I need to hear what didn't work just as much. Some things compromise the work and I can't alter those, but I can add things that readers need. My break out dark romantic suspense, A TERRIBLE LOVE is a case in point. When I read some reviews where readers wanted to hear more back story, and just more “why,” I fleshed that out in the companion, A BRUTAL TENDERNESS. However, the intrinsic character's personalities must remain true to who they are, a product of what shaped them in the past, and what the present is feeding them. I usually use the rule of “3s.” If I hear the same criticism three times (or the same “love”) I will emphasize the latter and improve the former.

I'll speak for all those who write: if you care about your words, you care about who's reading them. Altering your work to improve it for your reader while remaining true to your style isn't cheating, it's progressing.

Thank you so much for reading our work. Without you, they're just words on a page.

And now ... onto the book, oh yeah, and the GIVEAWAY!

Guest Post : Debra Kristi from The Age of the Hybrid series !!

Today, I am thrilled to have Debra Kristi -author of The Age of The Hybrid series- here to share with us a bit about her thoughts on writing!  I hope you enjoy and be sure to check out more on her books below!

Why ‘The Right’ Critique Partners Matter by Debra Kristi

Hi! It’s an honor to be here today on Reviewing in Chaos, to talk to you a bit about my writing path, and what I learned about my writing partners along the way.
Writing is subjective. What you or I may think is the best story ever written, someone else may shrug at or mark as the absolute worst. Every great author has their negative reviews. If you doubt it, just take a look. Dr. Seuss, Stephen King, You name it, if they have written enough to find an audience, they have gathered negative attention.
That’s okay. Honestly, it really is. If you are writing from your heart, finding your voice, it’s not going to please everyone, and that means negative reviews will come. But how do you find that voice and bring it to a place where it’s ready to meet the world?
You write. And you write, and write, and write. Obvious, right? Except, writing alone isn’t enough. As writers, we need to open ourselves up to the voices of constructive criticism. Through the sharing of work and feedback we become better writers and storytellers. We hear that all the time. But I have a huge ‘but’ to add to this statement. Not all criticism is worth your time.
When I first started along my writing path, I settled in with a cozy little critique group. It was all ‘change this’ and ‘cut that’ until my voice was jumbled and my confidence obliterated. My story didn’t know what it wanted to be anymore. I could no longer see the path through the rubble or words remaining. That story got filed away (for a long time), waiting for my head to clear. Writing partners are a lifeline in your journey. The relationship not only has to be cohesive, it has to spark―encourage your muse and energize your soul. If it’s not, it may not be the right one for you. Don’t be afraid to walk away from an unhealthy writing relationship. I did and it turned out to the best choice. As difficult as it may be in the moment, in the end it will make you a strong writer.
How do you find the right critique partner for you? It may be an evolving process or you may strike gold right out the gate. I suggest making a list of what matters to you in your writing and then looking for those same traits in another. Start there and expand your list as you grow. No matter what you do, never forget that you words have value and how others critique them makes a difference.
~
A huge thank you for having me here today! It has been a pleasure, and all the support is truly awesome. Thank you, thank you, thank you to the readers and fans, because you are the most important part of being a writer.

#1 My most memorable negative reviews

I was asked about how I handle negative reviews of my novels. I know that some new authors obsess about negative reviews, to the point of arguing with the reviewer or even asking the reviewer to remove the review. I’ve read some of these exchanges on Goodreads, and the author always comes off looking like a boorish idiot.

Thankfully, I haven’t had too many really negative reviews. My novels have either been well-received, or I assume the reader was so disgusted that they couldn’t bear to think of the book long enough to post something negative.

So, how do I handle a negative review? Cry a bit, drink several shots of vodka, and take a long hot bath. Then wander around in a depressive fog for months, unable to write or even get out of bed in the morning.

Not.

Everyone gets bad reviews. If you look at Amazon or Goodreads, you’ll see bestselling books with a thousand five-star reviews and twenty one-star reviews. It happens. Reading is such an exercise in personal attraction. Almost every Nobel Prize winner has some negative reviews.

But there are some one-star reviews that I remember fondly because they made me laugh.

This review on my first novel, The Succubus Gift, stands out. “Read it as it was written by a favorite author, but did not like it at all and will be cautious about future works by an author who previously had written some of my favorite reads.”
As I said, this was my first novel. The reviewer obviously thought that the book was written by my famous cousin. I guess if my name was Smith, this would happen far more often.
The other one that I will always treasure was also about The Succubus Gift. The reviewer said that the succubus main character not being monogamous bothered her, and gave it three stars. Then she edited the review the following day and gave it two stars. Her reason was that the book was “too mature” for a 22-year-old character. A couple of days later, she reduced it to a one-star rating. She said the ideas in the book made her so uncomfortable that she couldn’t get the book out of her head.
I think that any author would be proud of actually making a reader think.

I made silver and turquoise jewelry for almost a decade, ended up in nursing school, then took a master's in business.  Along the way I worked in construction, as a newspaper editor, a teacher, and somehow found a career working with computers.

As to my other interests, I love the outdoors, especially the Rocky Mountains.  I've skied since high school, with one broken leg and one torn ACL to show for it.  I've hiked and camped all my life.  I love to travel, though I haven't done enough of it.  I've seen a lot of Russia and Mexico, but not enough of England.  Amsterdam is amazing, and the Romanian Alps are breathtaking.  Lake Tahoe is a favorite, and someday I'd like to see Banff.
