Ash Krafton

Genre: urban fantasy

Publisher: The Wild Rose Press

Date of Publication: March 2013
ASIN: B00C14X6SG

Word Count: 20000

Cover Artist: Debbie Taylor

Book Description:

Jagger Sintallon, a half-demon warrior, has dedicated his existence to fighting demons who enter the world through Hell gates. A loner of conflicting ideals, he offers shelter to a troubled woman but knows he is too rough, too dangerous, and too cocky for her delicate nature.

Dedicated to Divine Will, Sonya Camael, a Seraph, is determined to discover why she is drawn to Jagger's doorstep and the reason behind her mission. She needs the demon's help but fears he may get himself killed before she can figure it out and the world slips into Hell's dominion.

Sonya faces grave danger with evil stalking her every move, and Jagger shouldn't care but realizes he cares more than he'd likely admit. Sonya knows Jagger cannot win this war alone, but will her divine intervention mean his imminent end? Or will just the right combination of Heaven and Hell set the world right once again?

Short Excerpt:

Jagger hung his head, looking very much out of patience. With an exasperated huff, he turned in place, his boots clomping. Cocky stance, head back, and eyes daring her to say something. But these things she only partially registered because when he turned to face her, his entire upper body—chest, face, arms—glowed with the marks of past insult and injury. And that sickle shape burned into the skin over his heart—
She whimpered, heart-sick to see him in this way. Her mother's blood cried out at the thought of what agony he must have endured to stand here now, so marred and wounded. Covering her eyes, she dispelled the Seraph sight and fought the tears.
"Hey." He was in front of her within moments, pulling her hands down and leaning to peer at her downturned face. "Hey, what's wrong?"
"You. You've been through so much. Just look at you."
"I'd rather not. I'm not a pretty guy."
"Jagger. These scars. You have countless hurts. I can't see a part of you that isn't injured." She raised her eyes, tears brimming on her lower lashes. "Let me help you."
"What, you're a plastic surgeon?"
She swallowed and regained part of her composure. "Better."
He looked alarmed and rocked back on his heels. "You don't mean—"
"Yes, I do." She held onto his hands and kept him from backing away. This felt right, this decision.
His eyes shifted. "Ah, I don't think it's a good idea, doll. Our kinds don't mix well."

[Interview + Review + Giveaway] Amazon Best Seller #6 - Not Quite Mine by @CatherineBybee

Hi everyone!  I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of  Catherine Bybee's  Not Quite Mine blog tour!  I reviewed Not Quite Dating and absolutely fell in love with Catherine on the spot.  Now I'm sitting here not so patiently drumming my fingers waiting til October rolls around and Not Quite Enough comes out so I can get my greedy hands on it!    Today is a good day for you guys!  Not only do you get to read my thoughts on  Not Quite Mine but you also get to enjoy a great interview with Catherine!!  You're welcome .  :) lol   Also-  don't forget to enter the absolutely awesome giveaway below!!   Good luck !

.

~  Interview Time ~

Hi Catherine!  Welcome to Reviewing in Chaos!  Not Quite Mine is book 2 in the Not Quite series, tell us a little bit about it and how many might we expect out of this series?

Not Quite Mine is the story about Katie and Dean. My readers will remember both characters from Not Quite Dating. Katie is a hotel heiress with everything in her life but the man she loves. Dean is Katie’s brother’s best friend… who once had an affair with Katie. *sigh* Now it’s time to bring these two back together.

As for how many book are in the series. Right now there are three slated. Not Quite Enough, Monica’s story, will be out in October. But I don’t want to limit myself and say there will only be 3 books. You never know.

I'm holding you to this.. Three books will never be enough for me.  I hope the characters keep pestering you and you keep writing more and more.. and more.. lol

I’m always interested in the writing process- where did the idea(s) for the Not Quite series begin?

Because it’s book two it’s safe to say the ideas began in book one. I love to write about families and each and every person within the pages has a story to tell.

Is there any favorite or memorable character in the Not Quite series that you have felt connected to?

Monica and I share a bond. By the time we get to Monica’s book, she works in the ER as a nurse. As many people know, in my non-writing life I worked in the ER as a nurse, too. When you read her story I think you’ll get a glimpse of a day in the life of what Catherine Bybee used to be.

Moving on to your writing career, how long have you been writing? Did you always dream to become an author?

I’ve been writing for five years or so. Have I always wanted to be a writer? Ah, no. I wanted to be an actress. But waiting tables sucked. I did have the ability to weave a story, however…so I decided to try my hand at this writing gig. And boy am I happy I did. Love, love, love it!

Have you ever experienced writer’s block?  If so, how were you able to get around it?

Not really. Every book has pages that nearly write themselves, and others that require the author to push through to the other side. I force myself to write several pages a day whenever the story isn’t ‘coming’ to me.

I’m always curious whether or not authors read the same types of books that they write.  So tell us, what book genres do you love to read? to write?

I love romance! I read romance every chance I get. I don’t want to be depressed when I finish a book.

What are you reading right now?

Nothing… I’m on a deadline. LOL

Deadlines are good things!  Get those books done so I can read them, my dear! Lol! :)

A few fun questions …

If you could jump into a book and live there, which one would it be and why?

Probably one of my time travels. That way I can have paranormal abilities and all the memories of the 21st century.

If you were stranded on a deserted island with only one book- what would it be?   I know many of my favorites I can read over and over and over again

I can’t answer that. And since I’m a writer, I’d be able to create my own anyway. J

Well that's just not fair!  The next time I'm asked that question I'm just going to have to take you instead of one of your books. Then you can constantly create new stories for me..  oohhh, that's a darn good plan!

Do you have any upcoming projects?

Always. I’m working on the 4th book in my Weekday Bride series, Single by Saturday and then I’ll be working on the much anticipated 5th book in my time travel series. My readers send me emails daily asking about Amber! “It’s coming!”

Thanks so much for stopping by today!!

Thank you for having me.

NOT QUITE MINE, BOOK TWO
Catherine Bybee

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publication :  May 07, 2013, First Edition

Paperback & Kindle
ISBN: 978-1611099515

Book Description :

Gorgeous hotel heiress Katelyn “Katie” Morrison seems to have it all. But when she crosses paths with Dean Prescott—the only man she’s ever
loved—at her brother’s wedding, Katie realizes there’s a gaping hole in her life. After the ceremony she gets an even bigger surprise: a baby girl left on her doorstep. Determined to keep the newborn until she learns who her mother is, Katie has her hands full and doesn’t need Dean snooping around…especially when his presence stirs feelings she thought were long gone..
Dean Prescott knows Katie is lying to him about the baby. He shouldn’t
care what the woman who broke his heart is up to…and he most
certainly shouldn’t still be aching for her. Yet Dean can’t ignore the need
to protect Katie—or the desire to be near her every chance he gets. But
when he and Katie solve the mystery surrounding the baby, their second
chance for happiness could be shattered forever.

Buy it :   Paperback   or  Kindle

My Thoughts :

Oh, where do I start?  While I loved Jack & Jessie in book 1,  Dean (oh Dean.. yum) and Katie really touched my hearts in book 2.  It could have been the construction site scenes with Katie running around in high heels and stealing Dean's hard hat ( I don't know about you but when I'm picturing construction scenes- the guys are all super buff and most likely shirtless.. lol) or maybe the baby dropped on Katie's doorstep.  As an adoptive mom, I remember those fears and worries that Katie had as she struggled with not falling in love immediately with this precious newborn that she wasn't sure she could keep.  Oh the emotions.

Not Quite Mine flows so smoothly that it doesn't feel like a sequel.  So many times after reading a good book, you wonder if the next one will be just as good.  No, it's even better!  We still get the needed sampling of Jack & Jessie -which I love seeing bits of their happily ever after!  Second chance love between Dean & Katie, throwing a baby into the mix and Katie's sudden turn into 'adulthood' is a combination you just can't miss. I could go on and on about all that I loved in this book but instead I'm just going to tell you to go buy it!  Now!  Quick!  Get them both and get caught up so you'll be ready when Not Quite Enough comes out in October!!

[Interview] Embers & Sparks by Laura Bickle

It's interview time again!  Today, we welcome Laura Bickle, author of the Anya Kalinczyk series to the blog!  I hope you enjoy the interview and more about her books below!

1. Tell us a little bit about your book.

By day, Anya Kalinczyk is an arson investigator for the Detroit Fire Department. By night, she’s the rarest kind of spiritual medium, a Lantern. While other mediums allow spirits to use their hands and voices to communicate, Anya devours and incinerates them. With the help of her fire salamander familiar, Sparky, and an eccentric group of ghost hunters, Anya chases down unseen threats to her city.

2. What inspired you to write this story?

I’d established a theme centering around flame…and decided to give Anya a fire salamander as a companion. Salamanders haven’t gotten much press since Paracelsus’ time. They’re the elemental avatars of fire. Our ancestors assumed that they were the spirits of fire, as they were often seen crawling out of logs tossed into hearth blazes. The salamander was probably annoyed to have his peaceful woodland home turned to tinder, and was making a fleet-footed escape. But alchemists and sorcerers made the link between salamanders and flames, and the association has endured. There’s not much to find about salamanders in the literature, beyond their origins. They’re rumored to be capricious, destructive, and unpredictable as fire itself. That made a salamander a perfect sidekick for Anya. And Sparky hopped out onto the page, wiggling his tail and looking for trouble. He takes the form of a five-foot speckled hellbender salamander. He loves chewing electronics and sleeps at the foot of Anya’s bed, cuddling his Glow Worm toy.
Wow, that was really interesting!  A lesson on Salamanders :)  lol @ cuddling his Glow Worm toy. I can just picture it now!

3. What is the main lesson that your book is trying to teach?

I’m not sure that there’s as much a lesson as a theme about being on the outside looking in. Anya is feared and distrusted by the people around her, an outsider among outsiders. She’s got one foot in the material world and one foot outside of it. She doesn’t feel like she really belongs in either.

4. Moving on to your writing career, how long have you been writing? Did you always dream to become an author?

I’ve always been scribbling, since I was old enough to hold a crayon. I didn’t believe, until recently, that other people would want to read what I wrote. It’s incredibly exciting to hear from folks who’ve enjoyed the stories I tell.
Writing as Laura Bickle and Alayna Williams, I wrote four urban fantasies. Two are best summed up as “Ghostbusters in Detroit with dragons and arson” (EMBERS and SPARKS). The other two, DARK ORACLE and ROGUE ORACLE, are about a criminal profiler who uses Tarot cards to solve crimes.

5. I’m always curious whether or not authors read the same types of books that they write.  So tell us, what book genres do you love to read? to write?

I love fantasy, urban fantasy, and YA. If there’s an element of the fantastic, I’m hooked!

6. What are you reading right now?

I’m reading Cat Winters’ IN THE SHADOW OF BLACKBIRDS. It’s amazing!

7. Have any particular authors inspired you to write? If so, can you name one and what you like about their style?

My all-time favorite is Robin McKinley’s HERO AND THE CROWN. I read it when I was a pre-teen, and fell in love with fantasy ever after. It was the first book I’d read that had a female protagonist who slew her own dragons. I was hooked.

8. Do you have any upcoming projects?

My newest release is THE HALLOWED ONES, a YA thriller. Katie is on the verge of her Rumspringa, the time in Amish life when teenagers can get a taste of the outside world. But the outside world comes to her when a helicopter falls out of the sky near her house. Katie must confront not only a massive disaster unfolding in the world outside her community, but also the threat of darkness in her own increasingly fragile society. The sequel, THE OUTSIDE, will be released in September.

Thanks so much for stopping by today Laura!!  I enjoyed chatting with you!!

“One of the most promising debut novels I’ve read in a great while… I’d highly recommend this book to anybody who reads fantasy. It reminds me in many regards…of another exceptional first novel…Emma Bull’s seminal War for the Oaks, and there’s not much higher praise that I can give.”

Anya Kalinczyk #2
Pocket Juno Books
Mass Market Paperback, $7.99
ISBN 978-1439167687
September 2010

The second book in Bickle’s series about Anya Kalinczyk is just as wonderful as the first—Anya is a compelling and likable protagonist and Bickle does an outstanding job in her portrayal of the city of Detroit; there are ruins, yes, but also hope in the ashes. Anya never takes herself too seriously and there is a scene in a baby supercenter that is absolutely not to be missed. (4 stars)
                 - RT Book Reviews

...a charming and inventive read.
-Elizabeth Bear, Realms of Fantasy Magazine, December 2010

WITHOUT A TRACE...
Anya Kalinczyk is the rarest type of psychic medium, a Lantern, who holds down a day job as an arson investigator with the Detroit Fire Department—while working 24/7 to exterminate malicious spirits haunting a city plagued by unemployment and despair. Along with her inseparable salamander familiar, Sparky, Anya has seen, and even survived, all manner of fiery hell—but her newest case sparks suspicions of a bizarre phenomenon that no one but her eccentric team of ghost hunters might believe: spontaneous human combustion.
After fire consumes the home of elderly Jasper Bernard, Anya is stunned to discover his remains—or, more precisely, a lack of them; even the fiercest fires leave some trace of their victims—and she is sure this was no naturally occurring blaze. Soon she’s unearthed a connection to a celebrity psychic who preys on Detroit’s poor, promising miracles for money. But Hope Solomon wants more—she’s collecting spirits, and in a frantic race against time, Anya will face down an evil adversary who threatens her fragile relationship with her lover, her beloved Sparky’s freshly hatched newts, and the wandering souls of the entire city.

Chapter excerpt:

Reviews

"Roers' debut novel heralds the arrival of an intelligent, heartfelt voice in the world of young adult fiction. The rich characters, emotional complexity, and confident prose are matched only by the landscape of dreams that Roers sets them against... a landscape brought vividly to life by the author's seemingly boundless imagination. This is a novel that respects its readers as much as its characters, and that's a beautiful rarity." ~ Mike Flanagan, Filmmaker, Absentia and Oculus

"Natalie Roers' debut novel is both riveting and relevant. More than a paranormal/fantasy/thriller, this is a complex tale that cuts to the very of heart of issues facing young adults today. Well sculptured characters and powerful imagery propel Roers' fascinating narrative." ~ Jason Tinney  Award-winning freelance journalist, musician, actor and the author of the story collection Bluebird.

"Lucid is an interesting story and a fun read." ~ Amy Carol Reeves, author of Ripper and Renegade

"Natalie Roers' voice is amazingly confident for a first novelist. Her journalist's eye for human detail draws you in, and makes you care about the people who populate the LUCID world. The more I got to know them, both awake and asleep in the world of lucid dreaming, the more time I wanted to spend in their world." ~ Jeff Howard, writer for Film District and Focus Features.

Excerpt:

Chapter 6
London, The City, Victoria Embankment.
The City of London Bank Headquarters.
Wednesday, January 20th, 2010.
10.10 a.m.
Alistair Connor MacCraig entered the meeting room from the connecting door of his office. The room was empty. He looked at his vintage Patek Philip Perpetual Calendar Moonphase.
Wales is already ten minutes late. Alistair didn’t do late. He opened the door to the reception room, looked around and noticed the back of two heads, one dark, one fair, inclined close together, engaged in an intimate conversation. He motioned for his personal assistant to come in. “MacKeenan, could you please let Mr. Wales know that
he is late while I start the meeting?”
Sophia looked at her watch and whispered to Edward, “I hate waiting.”
“Heavens, Sophia. It’s only been ten minutes.” He smiled at her. “How did you cope with Gabriela’s pregnancy?”
Her hazel eyes sparkled and the corners of her lips twisted. “Perfectly fine. I was already working then and if I was bored I just invented a new idea for her room or bought something new for her.”
“Poor, poor Gabriel,” he chuckled.
“Poor Gabriel?” She giggled, remembering how protective and overwhelming her husband had been. “Poor, poor me! He panicked when I told him I was pregnant. In the last month, he almost locked me inside the apartment.” She repressed a laugh and whispered to him. “When I told him it was time to go the hospital, I thought he was going to faint.”
The secretary approached them. “Mr. MacCraig is ready to receive you. This way, please.”
“Sophia, let me do the talking,” Edward whispered in her ear before entering the meeting room.
She paused at the tall, wide door, raised one eyebrow, looked at him, and made a face.
Men! “Trust me, Edward, I won’t put my foot in my mouth.” She put a hand on his arm, squeezed and stepped into the room.
Alistair scowled at his watch again and turned to look out at the London skyline. A well-known boredom took over his soul.
Another unvaried, insipid day. Yesterday, today, tomorrow. Every day is the same. Will light ever come back to my wearisome life? He heard the room door open again.  Another dull meeting discussing this contract. Today, I’ll get this account. At least, something to brighten my day. He pasted a smile on his face, turned on his heels and steeped forward to greet the CEO of Leibowitz Oil. But he stopped dead in his tracks.
Suddenly, Alistair’s private sun shed a bright ray of light from behind the dark, heavy clouds that had enclosed his life for more than five years.
Fuck! Davidoff is accompanied by a woman. A magnificent beauty. His world spun on its axis, leaving him lightheaded. He watched, paralyzed, as she paused at the door, made a teasing face at Davidoff, rested an elegant hand on his arm, spoke something, and gave him a reassuring smile.
Are they lovers? The thought annoyed him. Why, he didn’t know. The woman advanced a few steps and looked around the room, halting with parted lips when her gaze locked with his. He felt unsettled. She has the most beautiful hair I’ve ever seen.  Black as night and endless as the universe. Her flawless and honey-dipped skin. Her light hazel eyes, fringed by long raven lashes. Her thin and straight nose and her mouth… Christ! Her mouth is full and moist. Red. No lipstick, no gloss, just a natural, lush, fucking mouth.
His gaze surveyed her as she looked at Edward. Her long and slender neck. And she’s biting her full bottom lip and I… I’m getting an erection from this simple action. Ah. Fuck. The way she just licked her lips. His cock applauded and he gave himself a brisk mental shake. For Christ’s sake, Alistair Connor. You’re not a horny teenager anymore.
His eyes remained glued to her as she moved in his direction, taking in the
movements of her long elegant hands flattening her dress onto her body. Desire shot hotter through him. Lean, voluptuous body. Her legs… Is she a model? He cocked his head to the side. No, not tall enough. What is she doing here? Alistair shook himself inward. Stop this. Stop! It’s just another woman. And much too young. Most likely a trainee or Davidoff’s assistant. In all probability, she’s sharing his bed.
He couldn’t take his eyes off her.
She has an angelic aura around her, but… He knew women. They fell at his feet everyday offering their bodies for money and status. This one won’t be any different.  Christ, I really am a cynic. Come now, Alistair Connor, this is work. He smiled and extended his hand.
