~ Excerpt ~

When the rain got me, I was still running along an unfamiliar street that seemed endless on both directions. Within seconds, the drizzle became a cold downpour that soaked me to the bone, plastering the thin shirt and jeans onto my body. My hair was sticking on my face, pricking my eyes like dozens of needles, but I didn’t stop. Lost in a haze of despair, I could not comprehend the faint voice in my head that warned me to go back. I kept running away. Where I was heading, I could not tell anymore. Everything around me seemed strange and obscure; no houses, no shelter, only the perennial olive trees and the murky veil of rain. For the last two years in my life, every day, every minute, every second had been spinning around one single pivot; that rescue mission had been the only pivot of my new life. It had defined my actions, my thoughts, and my whole existence. I had gone a long way, overcoming any personal limit and fear, transcending time, only because I was fixed on a purpose. I had left my old life behind.
I had a life once.
Now, my mission was my life. A mission that had taken me far away from my family, my friends, my studies and my future. But I did not care anymore. I had chosen my destiny. It had always been about him. Christopher. He had turned his back on me and the pivot support had suddenly vanished. I had nothing to lean on. My whole life was collapsing. I was collapsing. There was no angel coming to my rescue this time.
A sharp pain in my chest blocked my breath, forcing me to stop. But I welcomed the pain, didn’t want it to ease out. Strangely enough, it seemed to be the right thing to feel. This is how some people have died, right? Perhaps this could be the end…
“Hey, you’re standing in the middle of the street!” a voice in my head shouted. “And that yellow light approaching is about to crash into you in minutes. Can’t you hear it? You have to move to the side. Don’t just stand there. It’s a car! It’s definitely a car and the veil of hale certainly does not help. MOVE!”
Then why wasn’t I moving? Could I be waiting for the car to put an end to this excruciating obstacle race I had started?
I closed my eyes and held my breath as the roaring sound of the car approached.

[Review + Giveaway] Werewolves Be Damned by @Stacey_Kennedy

Finally, the day has come for me to tell you my thoughts on Werewolves Be Damned.   Check out my initial post to read an excerpt.  Also, if you haven't already- be sure to enter the giveaway which I'm re-posting below!  If all else fails, just sigh at the cover again with me... sigh

Werewolves Be Damned
Magic and Mayhem, Book One
Stacey Kennedy

Genre: Urban Fantasy Romance

Publisher: Entangled Publishing
Date of Publication: April 15, 2013

ISBN: 9781622661046
ASIN: B00CBFZVU6

Number of pages: 267

Book Description :

Nexi Jones—part witch, part guardian, and wannabe kick-ass warrior—can’t throw a punch or conjure the simplest magic. But that doesn’t stop her from hunting the werewolves who slaughtered her human family. She’ll have her revenge, but only if Kyden, the elite guardian, would get the hell out of her way.

Kyden can’t decide if Nexi wants to get herself killed or if she just has no clue what she’s doing. But her father made it clear: keep Nexi safe…or else. Of course, the more Nexi runs toward revenge, the more she needs Kyden’s aid, and as she grows into her power and confidence, so does his desire to protect her. The only problem? She’d rather he dropped dead.

But when a vampire paints a bull’s-eye on Nexi’s back, she’s hard-pressed to deny Kyden and the help he’s offering. Even if it means getting her revenge will be a little bit harder. At least it will still be as sweet.

My Thoughts :

Nexi has lived a normal life up until her adoptive parents are murdered in front of her by werewolves and medieval looking warriors arrive to battle them.   Her life is promptly turned upside down when she comes to learn that she really isn't human at all.  Instead she is part witch, part guardian and was placed with her human family for her own safety when her biological mother was killed.

Werewolves Be Damned  starts off fast paced, thrown right into the action and continues going with that speed until the end.  The cover alone was enough to draw me in but with many of our favorite paranormal characters (werewolves, vampires, witches and now guardians), it has a little something for everyone ! There are no lulls, no good places to stop.. It's a read-it-straight-thru-and-sigh-at-the-end type of book.  I loved the action and the quick pace but I wouldn't have minded a tiny bit more in depth character development.  It's one of those books that you get so into the action and pace that you look up and realize all the sudden it's over.. Definitely going to read this one again!

Title: Schoolgirl Cinderella
Author: Priya Narendran

Genre: YA Fairytale Romance

Blurb:

Ten year old Briony Duke and her parents own a prestigious girls’ school in the country. This is in contrast to Mrs. Eyres, a middle-aged woman who has just been sacked by Briony’s father for embezzling funds. When Briony’s parents are killed in a car crash, Mrs. Eyres and daughter Lucy take over the school and Mrs. Eyres now becomes Briony’s guardian. Mrs. Eyres makes Briony sleep in the kitchen, cook, clean and tend to her and her daughter’s every whim. Seven years pass and one day Briony meets 19 year old Tom Logan, the sixth richest man in the country. She slowly starts to fall in love with the charismatic teenager, the only question is; can she win his heart before her evil stepsister does?

Excerpt :

Miss Carpenter turns away and Mrs. Eyres marches to the door and slams it shut. Miss Carpenter looks ahead with a vacant expression before she walks quietly through the courtyard. Mrs. Eyres, meanwhile, takes a breath and composes herself and then looks at her daughter who still stands by the staircase.

“Go and find her.”

Lucy nods and walks upstairs. By now Briony is lying on her bed with tears streaming down her face. She opens the locket.

“What shall I do?”

A second later the door flings open and Lucy marches in and snaps, “Mum said from now on this is my room.”

“Well your mother is wrong.”

“No she’s not.”

“Yes she is!”
Mrs. Eyres enters and says in her usual calm way, “Don’t be so impertinent child. I have the law on my side. But I do have another place for you to sleep.”

Mrs. Eyres throws Briony into a darkened kitchen and tells her, “From now on this is your room.”
Briony looks around and sees heaps of dirty dishes in the sink. Dirty laundry bundled near the washing machine and cobwebs hanging from the beams.

Mrs. Eyres continues, “You will eat here. Sleep here. You will cook, clean and do the laundry. You will not complain. Not answer back. And if you try to run away, I assure you, you will be found. Still, I do wish for you to have a decent education. Therefore, you will go to school every day until your eighteenth birthday. And one more thing.”
Mrs. Eyres marches up and holds her face taut, “Keep this our little secret and everything will be well.” Eyres lets go of her face and walks to the door, then glances back and says, “Sleep well Briony. You’re going to need it.”

Excerpt

I’ve found you, fur ball. Nexi peered from behind the large oak tree and spotted the small log cabin nestled in the thick forest. The porch light cast a warm glow into the night. Fog settled over the lush grass, and the night was dark, eerie. Stepping away from her hiding place behind the tree, she strode forward and gripped the dagger tightly in her hand. Keeping the silver blade pointed outward, she climbed the cabin’s porch steps, taking each one slowly to avoid detection. Once she arrived at the front door, she wrapped her hand around the door handle. Rich hunger for revenge burned in her veins and made her intent on one thing: to slaughter the werewolf who escaped the night of her parents’ murder. Not caring what awaited her, she stormed inside, dagger pointed, ready to kill. The simple cabin had two large brown couches near a wood-burning stove, a kitchenette behind the living room, and a quilt-covered bed resting in the back. And that was it; there were no other rooms to investigate. No secret hiding places she could see. No damned werewolf. She cursed, shut the front door behind her, then trotted down the steps to return to her hiding spot. On her way across the yard, she glanced at the space to the right of the tree, which looked much like a heat wave, indicating that the portal to the Otherworld remained. In some places around the world—or the Earthworld, as supernaturals had called it—there were permanent portals to the supernatural realm. This portal had only appeared because Nexi had travelled to this cabin from the Otherworld. Once she passed through the portal again, the gateway would vanish. Magic had its perks. Quick travel was one of them. Nexi shook her head at how normal all this magical stuff seemed now. Just over a month ago she’d never believed in anything that went bump in the night. Now she knew all those things existed, and in fact, she was one of them. To her horror, she had learned that her birth mother, Tillie, had been murdered by a power-hungry vampire, Lazarus.  All those years ago, her birth father, Drake, had protectively decided to block Nexi’s supernatural abilities. He had planned for her to live and die as a mortal. Now with her return to the Otherworld and the removal of the block on her true identity, there was no going back. She was no longer plain, human, Nexi Jones. She was Nexi Jones, part guardian, part witch. Looking away from the portal and to her hiding spot until the werewolf returned, she hurried her steps. She wasn’t ready to return to the Otherworld yet. Not until she had the werewolf’s head as her wall ornament would she dare go home. Just as she neared the tree, a woodsy scent that had nothing to do with the forest mixed with the citrusy aroma of aftershave. A blink of an eye later, the dagger she held was now at her throat, a hard body closed in on her back. “You smelled lovely when you arrived.” The low voice by her ear held a faint English accent. “But I never imagined you’d be so pretty.” The blade pressed into her skin, not drawing blood, but implying that if the werewolf chose, she’d be destined for the grave. “I’m…” “Going to explain yourself.” He lowered the dagger, took hold of her arm, and jerked her forward. In a few short strides, the werewolf tossed her through the threshold of the cabin, and slammed the door behind them. He sauntered to the couch, sat down, and regarded her. “Now then, darlin’.” His olive skin was stunningly flawless, and his chocolate-colored hair was spiked tall. “Why would a pretty lass like yourself plan to attack me?” “Don’t move.” That charm wouldn’t fool her. “Stay right where you are.” “My mouth is the only thing moving.” His slanted amber eyes raked over her. “Would you like me to stop talking?” “No.” She hesitated then added, “Only your mouth can move. Nothing else. Tell me what you know.”He gave her a long look. “I’d be glad to tell you anything you’d like, love.” His kind face and soft voice wouldn’t trick her. He was a werewolf. She was certain, which was another oddity. After the block on her supernatural abilities had been lifted, she could identify a supernatural creature as if knowing the difference between a brunette and a redhead. “Tell me why you killed my family.” “That’s an interesting accusation.” He cocked his head, studying her with a frown. “But I think the more important question is who are you?” She lifted her chin. “The lass who’s going to cut off your furry wolf balls.”
